What’s on: December in Otago
This month in Otago, it’s all about enjoying summer outdoors.
Make a splash and enjoy the barbecue, games and prizes at the Summer Pool Party, 7 December at the Mosgiel Pool. Or try your luck at Wingatui’s Christmas at the Races on Friday 13 December. Book a picnic spot or a fully catered marquee and enjoy a wee flutter on the horses, fine food and drink, live music and prize draws.
From 12 – 15 December it’s time to get real and get adventurous with the European Outdoor Film Tour (E.O.F.T.) at Rialto. “No script, no actors, no second takes or special effects, only true adventure”.
Don’t nap boxing day away. Put down the new toys, throw the Christmas dinner leftovers in a basket and head to the Summer Festival Boxing Day races at Wingatui, a traditional family day out.
Do you have what it takes to become the New Zealand Cherry Stone Spitting Champion? Find out at the Cromwell Cherry Festival on 29 December to celebrate the first delicious stonefruit of the season. Bring your bike and burn off those Christmas calories the next day at the Bannockburn MTB Classic. With rides for all classes and ages, you can compete or cruise while enjoying the Central Otago views.
To round off the year, dance, sing, play music and relax in the family friendly atmosphere at the Whare Flat Folk Festival from 30 December to 3 January at the Waiora Scout Camp.
There you are. Grab the sunscreen and a hat, get out there and celebrate everything Otago has to offer this Christmas and New Year. Enjoy!
