What’s on this December in Otago

Dust off the picnic basket and get some ice packs freezing - it’s finally summer in Otago!

Set the silly season off to a starry start this Saturday 3 December with festivities in the Octagon from 6:30pm, and the lighting of the Christmas Tree at 9:30pm. Have a picnic, make some fun decorations and sing along to your favourite carols.

With the tree lit, Santa and his reindeer can clearly see where to land. Give him a wave on Sunday 4 December, along with all the exciting floats and characters in the Santa Parade, starting from the Regent 24 Night and Day at 3pm and finishing in the Octagon with a family friendly concert.

For a quieter Sunday, refill the picnic basket and catch a spot of cricket. The White Ferns host Bangladesh from 2pm at the University Oval, in the second T20 of the season.

If you’re about in Central on Saturday, check out the Cromwell Festive Fete, under way from 10am at the Racecourse. Get your Christmas shopping done in style, with live music, food and wine to keep you humming while you browse the outdoor stalls.

From 9 - 23 December, Pixie Town is back! See the “Mechanical Marvel of the Age” with the pixies’ miniature antics on display once again with little merry-go-rounds, fire brigades, pony rides and bakers - a Christmas favourite since 1951.

Finally, after the big day, it’s time to relax with family and friends at the Wingatui Races, a Boxing Day tradition. Wrap up a few sammies from Christmas dinner and enjoy the trackside action and entertainment.
