What’s on in Otago this May

Autumn has entered its final and chilliest weeks so it’s time to head indoors for most of the action this month.

Check out live music every Saturday in May at Toitū and celebrate local talent throughout New Zealand Music Month at local and online events - in every place, for every age, in every genre. Do you hear the people sing? That will be fans of Les Misérables, looking forward to the return of the most popular musical ever. Get your tickets to the brand new production at The Regent from 6 - 15 May.

On 8 May, help cut the ribbon on the stunning new Lake Dunstan Trail. Join the ceremony in Clyde in the morning, then ride the 42km trail to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct for an afternoon of community celebrations.

This month the Highlanders take on the Queensland Reds in the first round of the new trans-Tasman competition. Take in the spectacle and cheer on our boys, 14 May at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

If you’re into brooding, thought-provoking lyrics “punctuated with psychedelic instrumental moments and soaring guitar solos”, you might already have your tickets for the Pink Floyd Experience. See the 2017 Animals Tour and the 2019 The Wall Tour combined in the ultimate iconic rock show, 20 May at The Regent.

Young performers take to the spotlight on 24 May in the performing arts competition, Showquest. Enjoy the Toi wearable art and original performances combining art, music, dance, drama, culture and technology, on stage at The Regent.

The Big Bike Film Night is a smorgasbord of inspiring, cycle-centric films from around the world. Tuck in and enjoy the ride - 21 May at the Central Cinema in Alexandra and 24 May at Rialto Cinema in Dunedin. Finally, farewell May on a high note with the Banff Mountain Film Festival, 26 May at the Regent. Explore a selection of award-winning films to take your breath away.
