Motatapu – Saturday 7 March
Once a year. One epic day.
The iconic Motatapu opens up breathtaking high country stations between Wānaka and Arrowtown for mountain bikers, trail runners and walkers. Choose from the 47km mountain bike, trail marathon, 15km Miners Trail, the legendary 52km Ultra, or get the kids involved in the Junior Trail Run. River crossings, tussock-covered ridgelines and unforgettable views make this more than a race – it’s a rite of passage.
3 Peaks Mountain Race – 15 March
Dunedin’s iconic mountain challenge is back for its 43rd year. Tackle the 26km classic, push further with the 56km 3 Peaks Plus 1 (NZ Short Course Trail Running Championship), or opt for the 11km Race the Summit. Expect native bush, steep climbs and panoramic views across Dunedin.
Northburn100 – 21–22 March
Set at Northburn Station, this “good honest” mountain ultra includes 50km, 100km, 100 mile events, plus 10km and 5km night runs and a kids’ race. Tough, raw and spectacularly Central Otago.
Ripe – The Wānaka Wine and Food Festival – 21 March
Glendhu Station comes alive with over 20 Central Otago wineries, craft beer, premium cocktails and incredible food vendors. Headlined lakeside by Dave Dobbyn, this fifth edition promises award-winning pinot noirs, refreshing rosés and live music in one of the most stunning settings in the country.

Dunedin Fringe Festival – 12-22 March
Ōtepoti ignites with creativity as venues across the city host dance, theatre, comedy, music, karaoke and more. The Fringe brings bold ideas and boundary-pushing performances to the heart of Dunedin.
Southern Lakes Home & Garden Show – 6–8 March
Held at Queenstown Events Centre, this is your one-stop hub for inspiration. With expert advice, show specials, kids’ activities and free parking, it’s perfect whether you’re mid-renovation or just gathering ideas.
Wānaka A&P Show – 13–14 March
Set beside stunning Lake Wānaka, one of New Zealand’s largest agricultural and pastoral shows celebrates everything rural. Expect equestrian events, livestock competitions, the iconic Jack Russell race, food trucks, rides and family fun. Live music flows into the evening at The Scapegrace Show Bar.
Highlands Festival of Speed – 27–29 March
After a year off, this fan-favourite returns to Highlands in Cromwell. Historic and classic race cars battle it out on the world-class circuit. Kids 16 and under are free, and every ticket includes entry to the National Motorsport Museum, Young Guns Virtual Reality Room and more. Off-track entertainment, food vendors and family activities make it a full day out.

White Ferns vs Zimbabwe – 5, 8 & 11 March
